Battlefield 3 European Release Date

As we reported earlier regarding Activision boss Kotick’s appearance in an upcoming Brad Pitt movie, the battle for FPS genre supremacy is at a fever pitch. Both sides would, just going by appearances, do anything to stay on the media radar screen.
This time, it’s Battlefield 3 publisher EA’s turn. According to EA president Frank Gibeau, the upcoming battle of the releases between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3 is like pitting Roger Moore’s James Bond against Jason Bourne. He went all in when he mentioned the dreaded “R” word. He implied that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be on rails and Battlefield 3 will not. Talk about firing off some provocative words. Calling a game a “rail” game is tantamount to spitting on your opponent’s mother. Rail games disgust many gamers because they are predictable, mechanical, boring, and just so dated.

Gibeau went on to explain. “With Call of Duty you can see the entire Russian navy showing up with more warships than they have in reality. One way to think about it is just like Roger Moore’s James Bond versus Jason Bourne in the spy realm”; almost caricature-like scale versus a grounding in reality. Gibeau isn’t pulling any punches. Of course, none of this is exactly new since gamers, who are well aware of the Call of Duty series, know its background and story orientation. Gibeau continues to play up Battlefield 3′s dedication to realism. While he does raise a good point, realism is not the ‘end all be all’ of FPS titles. Video games, for all their striving for hyper realism is still an escape for those who play it. It is entertainment. And there must always be space for imagination and flights of fancy
